Right now, this very moment, Eastern Redbuds are in peak bloom throughout the middle of the Chesapeake watershed. There’s really nothing quite like this native understory tree species in spring. And we all need a view of it this year in particular!
Redbuds (Cercis canadensis) range through much of eastern US, so they aren’t uniquely Chesapeake. But still, they are abundant here under the overstory trees in our woods, in our parks and yards, and along our streets.
Their presence now, their remarkable beauty, helps provide another respite from the routine. Look at them up close–some people get close enough to pick the blossoms for salads — for their magic won’t last long!
